We provide an authentic approach to Bharatanatyam teaching, similar to the traditional learning experience you would receive from a teacher in India.
Students begin with basic exercises and gradually progress to basic adavus. Once the basic adavus are completed, students move on to advanced adavus.
Learning the adavus may take approximately 1.5 to 4 years, depending on the student’s age, regularity of attendance, practice, attention, and individual learning pace.
Every student takes their own time to develop a genuine love for the art and a deeper understanding of Bharatanatyam. Patience is the key to learning any art.
Once all the adavus have been completed, students begin learning the first set of natyams (dance items) in preparation for Salangai Pooja.
This stage may take approximately 1 to 2 years. After learning around 5 to 6 natyams, students are honoured to wear their dance salangai after receiving the blessings of Lord Nataraja and their Guru.
Students then progress to the second set of natyams, which includes more complex dance steps and longer-duration dance items. This stage may take approximately 1.5 to 2.5 years.
Once the second set of natyams is completed, students can begin preparing for their Arangetram, an important milestone in the journey of a Bharatanatyam dancer.
By completing both sets of natyams, the student completes one Maargam, which consists of the significant dance items that form a complete Bharatanatyam repertoire.
Students who have the time and interest can continue their learning by exploring Nattuvangam and progressing to the next Maargam. This provides an opportunity to further develop their knowledge, technique and skills in Bharatanatyam.
There is no fixed timeline for mastering Bharatanatyam. Regular practice, patience, dedication and a genuine love for the art are essential to progressing through each stage of the learning journey.
